WOODWORKER I
Exhibit Services Department
Fixed-term, Full-Time Position





SUMMARY:


Exploratorium Exhibit Services (EXS) produces exhibits for display at, and for sale to, other sites and also provides a range of consulting services.  The EXS Woodworker I will help facilitate the construction of exhibits from working prototypes into exhibits for sale. The position also carries the responsibility of building and installing interactive exhibits within budget and schedule to meet the needs of our clients. The position reports to the Production Manager.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    • Construct high quality exhibits according to Exploratorium guidelines.
    • Fabricate parts using shop machinery and CNC technology.
    • Maintain shop equipment and tools.
    • Maintain adequate supplies.
    • Complete assignments in a timely manner.
    • Process time sheets, purchase orders, and associated paperwork.
    • Read assembly drawings, bills of material, maintenance manuals and assembly instructions.
    • Communicate frequently with EXS managers and staff regarding production schedules and exhibit construction procedures and construction revisions.
    • Photograph construction details, and organize construction information.
    • Travel to museums domestically and internationally to install, maintain, repair, and de-install exhibits under the supervision of EXS Exhibit Techs.
    • Meet daily and weekly goals as set by the Production Manager and Chief Engineer.
    • Collaborate with design, engineering and production staff to find efficient ways to create exhibits.
    • Work with the Production Manager for creative ways to bring new technology into our current system.
    • Guide other staff in the use of woodshop equipment.
    • Additional related duties as assigned.
               

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • 2 - 5 years experience with cabinet/furniture construction. Preferably in a production environment.
    • 2 - 5 years experience operating common woodshop machinery including table saw, jointer, planer, drill press, vacuum bag press, panel saw.
    • 1 - 3 years laminating various forms.
    • Able to maintain shop equipment and hand tools.
    • Inherent interest in science, art and engineering.
    • Overall understanding of production wood shop skills and techniques.
    • Demonstrated ability to learn or proven skills with the following software: AutoCAD 2002, File Maker Pro, and Master CAM. 
    • Demonstrated abilities in the field of woodworking.
    • Ability to work closely with Exploratorium staff, clients, subcontractors, and people in learning institutions outside the Exploratorium.
    • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Proven ability to work with people at all levels of the organization.
    • Talent for collaborating to create an effective team.
    • Sensitivity to mission of museum.
    • Hold current passport.
    • Other preferred skills:
    • BA /BS from an accredited college/university or equivalent coursework and/or experience in the fields of design, art, cabinet/furniture making.
    • AutoCad, CNC programming, welding, machining, finishing
