PROSPECT RESEARCH OFFICER
Development Department
Regular, Full-Time Position
SUMMARY:
The Prospect Research Officer participates as a key member of the Development Office, working collaboratively to identify potential new sources of major institutional funding, analyzing and qualifying research, and helping to manage and track prospect cultivation. This position reports to the Director of Individual Giving but also works closely with the Deputy Director of Development, Development Officers for Annual Support, Capital Campaign Officer, and Development Services Administrator. The ideal candidate for this position is a self-motivated, highly resourceful professional who has experience playing a central role in fundraising for a major non-profit cultural institution.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinate Development Department research efforts.
- Proactive research to identify prospective major donors using in-house archives and other sources including robust use of internet resources, proprietary databases, local and national business journals and periodicals, and leads from board members and staff.
- Profile and analyze current members and donors for potential upgrades using the Exploratorium’s patron management database, Raiser’s Edge, and prior database screening results.
- Assist in calculating philanthropic gift capacity for prospects based on estimated financial capacity and inclination.
- Develop a standard profile for prospective donors that concisely summarizes financial, philanthropic and other background information.
- Condense and compile data and prepare in-depth prospect research including narrative and quantitative profiles and prospective donor visit briefings for presentation to senior level staff and board members.
- Reactive research to fulfill Department’s research requests by gathering, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting requested information in a clear, concise and relevant manner.
- Assist with research for prospective Board of Director’s members and Advisory Council members.
- Assist in maintaining a prospect/donor research and tracking system using the Raiser’s Edge database.
- Participate in the tracking and monitoring progress of prospects through a cultivation/stewardship tracking system (i.e., “moves management”) using the Raiser’s Edge database towards realizing increased gifts and to assess effectiveness of cultivation strategies used.
- Integrate research information into the Raiser’s Edge research module, as well as hard-copy files as necessary.
- Maintain office-wide prospect and pipeline reports.
- Maintain appropriate internal research library and manage budget for research-related expense lines.
- Attend Development managers meeting, as needed, to discuss fundraising strategies and make recommendations on cultivation strategies and priorities, based on research findings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree and 3 years prospect research and tracking experience in a not for profit environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency in prospect research, prospect management, and proactive prospecting methodologies, concepts and strategies to cultivate and secure prospects.
- Familiarity with various research and information management tools used in performing donor and prospect research and electronic screening, including the internet and online informational databases such as LexisNexis and WealthEngine.
- Solid understanding of relational database concepts, database management experience preferred, Raiser’s Edge for Windows highly desirable.
- Experience in data analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of information.
- Familiarity with obtaining and interpreting public records desirable.
- Ability to read and interpret financial and SEC document, including IRS form 1990’s, 10Q’s, and DEF14’s (proxy statements).
- MS Office Suite expertise and knowledge of PC required.
- Excellent communications, written verbal and analytical skills.
- Ability to utilize good judgment and ethics in handling confidential materials.
- Knowledge of science preferred, and knowledge of arts and education helpful.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage multiple project.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented.
- Possession of good problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work at computer for extended periods of time.
- Ability to move from place to place; use a computer terminal and telephone; able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds short distances, can bend, twist, reach, grasp.
